Week 26 Highlights!

What a wonderful week!

We began our week with Mystery Reader.  Thank you Peter for sharing The Book with No PicturesThe Blue Whale, and an Elephant and Piggie favorite.

Tuesday was filled with excitement and exploration with a trip to the Field Museum.  A very big thank you to our parent chaperones.  Take a peek at our kindergartners at the museum.

We continued our author study theme by reading books by Dr. Seuss.  We reviewed rhyming words and word families with stories such as The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?, and Hop on Pop.  We ended the week by reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck.  Have fun making oobleck at home!

We added one new word to our word wall this week.  Our new word wall word is little.  Please continue to practice our kindergarten word wall word lists and sight word punch cards with your child at home.

In writer's workshop, we began our opinion writing unit.  We completed an on-demand and our first lesson of bend one.  We learned that writers write to fix problems in our world.  When writing opinion pieces, we must see a problem, think, and write.  We created an anchor chart of problems we can fix in our classroom and at Irving School.  Using our ideas as guides, we are creating opinion pieces that tell a problem, share why it is a problem, and how we can fix the problem.  Please brainstorm opinion writing ideas with your child at home.  Take a peek at our opinion writers!

We continue to explore number bonds, addition, and subtraction in the fourth module of our math curriculum.  This week we introduced subtraction!  We used pictures, number sentences, and math talk to represent subtraction equations.  During math tubs, we explored addition to five and ten, subtraction, Subitize Tree, counting by 10, I-Spy, and Find Sums on the iPad.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians hard at work!

We began the pushes and pulls investigation of our Materials and Motion unit.  Our focus question was what causes objects to move.  We experimented with a variety of objects to see how speed, force, and gravity make objects move.  Take a peek at our kindergarten scientists exploring what causes objects to move.
