We began the week with a visit from our Mystery Reader, Ms. Arnoldt. Thank you for sharing Boris and the Wrong Shadow with our class.
Our story of the week was Butterflies by Tori Kosara. Using our text, we explored asking and answering questions about unknown words, identifying main idea and supporting details, and sequenced the lifecycle of the butterfly. Please ask your child to share with you what the word chrysalis means and tell you three facts about butterflies.
In writer's workshop, we completed the final bend of our opinion writing unit. Our mentor text this week was The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. We discussed problems we see in the environment and ways to make our writing really convincing. We also began fixing up old opinion writing pieces. We hope to send home our opinion writing at the beginning of next week.
We completed the fourth module of our math curriculum. This week we focused on fluently adding to ten using subitize cards, number paths, number bonds, and number sentences. We also reviewed core fluency sprints. Students are given 90 seconds to complete as many number sentences correctly. Every Monday we will complete core fluency sprints to practice addition and subtraction facts to ten. Please review addition and decomposition of numbers with your child at home.
During math tubs, we reviewed addition and subtraction to ten, Subitize Tree, one-to-one correspondence to twenty, dice addition, I-Spy, and Find Sums on the iPad. Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians hard at work.
We continue to explore Animals Two by Two in our new FOSS science unit. Our focus questions of the week were what are night crawlers and how are redworms and night crawlers similar and different. We observed and examined our redworms and night crawlers. We compared and contrasted their features. We also watched our caterpillars transform into chrysalises. Take a peek at our kindergarten scientists exploring night crawlers.
