Week 1 Highlights!

We made it through the first week of kindergarten!

We have been busy learning all about classroom and school routines and procedures.  Take a peek at our kindergartners working together and following our Room 116 classroom rules during free choice.

This week we began establishing many of our academic routines such as morning meeting, phonemic awareness, reading, writer's workshop, calendar book, whole group math, and math tubs.

Our weekly poem was our "Name Chant".  We are learning our friends' names, while identifying beginning sounds, and words we can read.  Please ask your child to sing our name chant to you!
In reading, we explored kindergarten themed books.  Using books like David Goes to School and Recess Queen, we discussed and compiled a list of classroom and school rules.
During math tubs, we explored manipulatives, sorted shapes, played roll to fill the cup, used playdough to create numbers, and .  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians hard at work!
We ended our wonderful first week by meeting our book buddies from Mr. Sakellaris's 5th grade class.  Take a peek at the sweet pictures of our kindergartners with their book buddy.  I can't wait to see their friendships blossom during our kindergarten year.
Upcoming Dates
  • Irving Open House/Curriculum Night--September 7th from 6:30-8:30pm
  • Back to School Party-- September 8th beginning at 5:30pm

During writer's workshop, we learned that we are all writers! We began putting ideas on paper with pictures and words.

We began our monthly calendar books! In August, we are focusing on counting to ten, one to one correspondence to five, shape identification, and days of the week.  We are also practicing how to count to 100 every day!

This week in whole group math, we discussed how things can be the same and different.  We loved sorting socks and kindergarten supplies!

On Thursday, we visited the Irving Library and meet our teacher librarian, Ms. Noonan.  We learned about how to take care of our library and books.  We can't wait to check out books from the library next week!
