Week 5 Highlights!

What an exciting week of learning we had!

This week, during our Shared Reading we read the poem, Itsy Bitsy Spider. This old favorite was fun each day. We sorted pictures by letters and sounds - R, F, Y and K, both in groups and independently. Additionally, during our morning meetings we are worked on building our classroom community and working together. We have learned some new games and we are enjoying playing together at Free Choice!

During Reader's Workshop we came back to one of our Old Favorites, The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We spent time as a whole group and with our reading partners, retelling stories. We practiced using character voices, looking at the pictures to match our words, and connecting pages by using words "first, then, last." Ask your child to retell the story, specifically the different character voices throughout the story! We also worked on identifying characters, setting and the main events.

The kindergartners improve on their independent work stations each week! In Daily 5, we continued to work on letter identification and formation. We used Handwriting Without Tears wooden lines and curves to build letters, we built letters with pom poms, read to ourselves, played Roll Say Keep with friends, and matched colors and letters. Take a look at the Kindergartners hard at work!

During Writer's Workshop, we worked on telling stories. We practiced as a group breaking down the details of telling the story of our Fire Drill Monday morning. Writers practice telling stories out loud before they write the story down. We practiced sharing detailed, true stories with a friend, and then beginning to stretch our stories across pages. Our writing stamina increases with each day! Take a look.

This week during Math, we continued to work on one-to-one correspondence - counting to 10. We added new tools to our toolkit to build our fluency skills, including dice and a number story mat. In Math Tubs, we continued to work on number identification and formation, sorting, shapes and identifying same vs. not-the-same. We are having fun with our math tub partners, and making improvements on on-task behavior each week!

We had many guest readers this week! We celebrated Philip's birthday with the Rzucidlo family. As well as Quinn Costello-Wollwage's birthday with his mom as Mystery Reader! Thank you for joining us!!

Mr. Sak's 5th Grade class brought in their Old Favorites in on Friday afternoon. We got to hear our Book Buddies read to us - a wonderful Friday afternoon treat!
