Week 27 Highlights!

What a great week!

Here's a peek at our week:

We ended our week with a visit from a Mystery Reader.  Thank you, Mr. Daniel, for sharing Ruby and Grub and Happy Birthday, Cupcake! with our kindergartners.

Our Shared Reading this week was Splish! Splash! to the tune of Home on the Range.  We did word studies sorting by rhyming words, word families, and introduced one new word wall word.  Please practice an at home.

We continue to explore independent early literacy skills during our Daily 5 word work stations.  We reviewed consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) short a, i, and o words.  We also reviewed sight words by sorting and coloring.  We worked on writing, developed phonemic awareness skills using Lexia, and read to ourselves in our book boxes.  Please ask your child to share with you their favorite Daily Five station this week.

In Reader's Workshop, we began the next unit in our workshop curriculum.  Our forth unit is all about being an avid reader. We learned the characteristics of an avid reader, how we can react to books by sharing the character's feelings, and captured thinking about books.  Take a peek at our kindergartners modeling avid reading!

Our Read Aloud this week was City Dog, Country Frog by Mo Willems.  Our comprehension focus was identifying character, setting, and key details.  Please ask your child to share with you the events of the story.

In Writer's Workshop, we began our opinion writing unit.  We learned that opinion writers see a problem, think about why it is a problem, and write how to solve the problem.  We created a chart of problems we see at school and began our letter writing campaigns to make change in our classroom and at Irving School.

During Math Tubs, we reviewed dice addition, number bonds, number words, ten frames, addition to ten, comparing numbers, and number sense to 100.  In whole group Math, we continued to work on subtraction to 10. We used pictures, manipulatives, equations, and number bonds to represent subtraction.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians!

In Science, we introduced our March STEM tubs.  This month we are creating rainbows using pipe cleaners, playdough, and Legos.  We are also building structures using rainbow Fruit Loops, wood blocks, and marbles.  Take a peek at our kindergarten scientists!

We ended the week with a visit from our Book Buddies.  We taught our buddies what it means to be an avid reader.  Look for a video of our book buddies on the Irving website in the next few weeks!
