Kindergarten Here We Come!

Kindergarten is almost here! Here are a few notes to help our families navigate our classroom, Irving School, and our daily routines:

First Day of Kindergarten
  • We will have a typical school day on August 22nd.  Please arrive around 7:55pm to line up in our kindergarten line and begin to meet a few of your classmates.   If you missed supply drop off, we will be collecting your child's school supplies at this time.
  • If you are a returning family, we are changing our first day procedures this school year.  To align with the other kindergarten programs in the district, we will no longer have parents join us in the classroom for the first hour of our school day.
  • We will follow Wednesday dismissal procedures at 2:30pm. Please arrive promptly at dismissal.
  • I will provide your child with a healthy snack on the first day of school.
Schedule
  • Opening bell rings at 7:55am.  The kindergarten teachers will pick up their classes promptly at the second bell, 8:00am. Please stay with your child until the second bell rings in the morning.
  • Lunch recess begins at 11:40am and students will eat lunch in the cafeteria at 12:15pm.  We will return to our classroom at 12:45pm.
  • The dismissal bell rings at 3:00pm.  Wednesday is early dismissal day.  Students dismiss at 2:30pm.  Please arrive promptly for dismissal.
  • If your child arrives after 8:00am, please accompany your child to the office for a tardy slip.
  • If you child will be absent from school, please call the office at (708) 524-3090 as well as email me at jgrogan@op97.org
Communication
  • The best way to contact me is by email--jgrogan@op97.org
  • I can also be reached via classroom phone at (708) 524-3090.  Please note that I will be available to have phone conversations before school, after school, and during planning periods.
  • Please check our classroom blog for weekly updates, important classroom and school events, and pictures of our kindergarten adventures.
  • Please check your child's backpack every evening to take a peek at their Take Home folder.  Inside the Take Home folder you will find forms, flyers, student work, and our daily behavior calendar.
Health and Wellness
  • We will eat snack in our classroom every morning.  Please send your child with a healthy snack each school day.  It is a good idea to label your child's snack so there is no confusion.  We have students with allergies in kindergarten.  Please have a conversation with your child about not sharing snacks.
  • If you are interested in contributing bulk snacks for our kindergartners, please let me know.
  • Please have a conversation with your child each morning about what s/he will have for lunch that day.
  • Lunch choices are home lunch or hot lunch.  If your child is having hot lunch they will be given four choices: hot lunch, sandwich, salad, or pizza kit.  Milk is included for children who order hot lunch.  If your child brings a home lunch, they will have the option to order a milk.  Please remind your child if they need to order a milk or hot lunch every morning.
  • We have allergies in our classroom, but it is fine to have nuts in home lunches in the cafeteria.
  • Please no edible birthday treats.  We will discuss birthday celebrations during Open House/Curriculum Night.
  • I cannot give medicine to our students.  Our school nurse, Ms. Jamie Peterson, will help you navigate medical forms and medicines.  You can contact her at jpeterson@op97.org
