Week 15 Highlights!

What a wonderful week!

During our Shared Reading, we focused on the poem, The Gingerbread Boy, to explore letters, sounds, rhyming words, and print concepts.  We introduced one new word wall or snap word this week.  Our new word that we can read in a snap is he.  Please practice identifying, reading, and writing our sight words with your child at home.

In Reader's Workshop, we continued our Super Powers unit.  This week we introduced our seventh super power, persistence power.  We are working to build private reading stamina using our persistence power.  I have been impressed with our super readers who are now up to 6 whole minutes of independent reading.  Please ask your child to show you their reading super powers at home.

Our Read Aloud of the week was The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth.  We discussed character, settings, and important events.  We used retell cards to identify the beginning, middle, and end of our story.  We also acted our the story with our classmates.  We have quite the actors in our room!  Please ask your child to share story elements from our weekly read aloud.

During Daily Five word work stations this week, we played Sort It, Color, It, Roll and Read It, and Spin It with our snap words.  We reviewed our word sorts and explored Lexia on the iPad.  Thank you Mrs. O'Keefe for joining us to help with our phonemic awareness activities.  We also practiced labeling at the writing table.  Please ask your child what was their favorite Daily Five station this week!

This week during Writer's Workshop, we continued our narrative writing unit.  This week's focus was using our writing partners to make our writing stronger.  Our partners read, made suggestions, and helped edit each other's narrative stories.  We even began to publish our favorite narrative stories on the writing wall!

We continue to practice uppercase letters in our Handwriting curriculum.  We learned how to write all corner starter letters.  Our corner starters this week were X, Y, and Z.  Please practice our frog jump and corner starter uppercase letters with your child at home.

In Whole Group Math, we continued the third module in our Eureka Math curriculum.  Our focus of module three will be measurement and data.  This week's focus was comparing height and weight.  We discussed, compared, and contrasted items using the terms longer than, taller than, shorter than, heavier than, and lighter than using unifix cubes and a balance scale.

This week during Math Tubs, we continued a new round of tubs.  This rotation will focus on numeral writing, one-to-one correspondence, number identification, shape identification and composition, and basic addition.  Please ask your child what their favorite math tub was this week.
