Week 22 Highlights!

What a great week!

During our Shared Reading, we focused on the poem, Groundhog's Day, to explore letters, sounds, rhyming words, and print concepts.  We introduced one new word wall or snap words this week!  Our new word that we can read in a snap is no.  Please practice identifying, reading, and writing our sight words with your child at home.

In Reader's Workshop, we continued our third unit, Bigger Books, Bigger Reading Muscles.  This week we focused on using sound power to read beginning sounds and consonant clusters.  We also introduced the blends and digraphs chart.  With our partners we practiced reading tricky words in our leveled reader texts.  Take a peek at our kindergarten readers practicing sound power during reader's workshop.

Our Read Alouds of the week were two of our leveled reader texts, Animals in Spring and Animals in Fall.  We compared and contrasted the texts based on the food, activities, and outside characteristics of the animals in different seasons.  Please ask your child to share two similarities and differences in our texts.

During Daily Five word work stations this week, we played Sort It, Color, It, Roll and Read It, and Spin It with our snap words.  We reviewed our word sorts and explored Lexia on the iPad.  We also practiced labeling at the writing table.  Please ask your child what was their favorite Daily Five station this week!

This week during Writer's Workshop, we completed our second bend in our how-to writing unit, Learning from Mentor Texts. Using My First Soccer Game as our guide, we introduced writing for the reader and using the snap word you in our writing.  We also added tips, warnings, suggestions, and comparisons to our how-to stories.  We can't wait to share with you our how-to writing collections.

We continue to practice lowercase letter writing in our Handwriting curriculum.  We introduced correct letter formation for lowercase u, i, and e.  Please review our uppercase letter, number, and lowercase magic c letters with your child at home.

In Whole Group Math, we continue to explore number pairs, decomposing, and composing numbers in the fourth module in our Eureka Math curriculum.  This week's focus was composing and decomposing numbers to 10.  We also introduced the math symbols plus, minus, and equals.  Please ask your child to share with you a number bond and equation for each of our numerals to 10.

This week during Math Tubs, we continued our round of tubs.  Our rotation will focus on number writing, teen numbers, subitizing, one-to-one correspondence, number sequencing, and basic addition to 10.  Please ask your child what their favorite math tub was this week.

In Science, we continue to explore materials in our second unit, Materials and Motion.  This week's focus question was what is the difference between fabric and paper?  We sorted and classified objects made out of both materials.  Please ask your child to identify and describe materials in your home.  Next week we will begin our materials and motion STEM tubs!
