Week 30 Highlights!

What a wonderful week!

During our Shared Reading, we focused on the poem, Spring Celebration, to explore letters, sounds, rhyming words, and print concepts.  We reviewed our kindergarten snap words this week.  The words we can read in a snap are it, is to, on, my, up, in, and the.  We also introduced snap words will and us.  Please practice identifying, reading, and writing our sight words with your child at home.

In Reader's Workshop, we continue to explore our fourth unit, Becoming Avid Readers.  This week, we reviewed three ways to "play" during workshop.  We can play school, play games, and play pretend.  Our focus this week during reading playdates was playing games.  We introduced the "what's next" and "what's the feeling" games.  Please ask your child to show you how to play our two prediction games.

During Read Aloud this week we began our themed story sets.  This week's theme was the importance of friendship.  Some stories we read this week were A Visitor for BearBig Al and ShrimpyI'm the Best, and Jessica. We shared similarities and differences in all of our friendship books.

During Daily Five word work stations this week, we played Sort It, Color, It, Roll and Read It, and Spin It with our snap words.  We continue to explore phonics skills using our Word Sorts.  We introduced new sorts this week.  Please ask your child to share with you their word pattern.  We also practiced our phonemic awareness skills using Lexia on the iPad.  We practiced labeling and creating lists at the writing table.  Please ask your child what was their favorite Daily Five station this week.

This week during Writer's Workshop, we completed our opinion writing unit!  Our focus this week was reviewing the different ways to write an opinion piece.  We can write a statement, letter, or preference story.  Please check your child's folder for their opinion writing collection.

In Whole Group Math, we continue to explore number pairs, decomposing, and composing numbers in the fourth module in our Eureka Math curriculum.  This week's focus was subtraction from 10 and adding one more.  Next week we will begin our fifth module all about teen numbers.

This week during Math Tubs, we completed our round of tubs.  Our rotation will focus on number writing, teen numbers, subitizing, one-to-one correspondence, manipulating 100 objects, number pairs to 10, and basic subtraction.  Please ask your child what their favorite math tub was this week.

Nurse Jamie joined us on Friday for a Dental Health presentation.  Take a peek at our kindergarten scientists writing and making a craftivity about ways to keep their teeth healthy.
