Week 1 Highlights!

We made it through the first week of kindergarten!  You should be so proud of your child.

We have been busy learning all about classroom and school routines and procedures.  Take a peek at our kindergartners working together and following our Room 116 classroom rules during recess and free choice.

This week we began establishing many of our academic routines such as morning meeting, phonemic awareness, reader's workshop, read aloud, writer's workshop, calendar book, whole group math, and math tubs.

In morning meeting, we introduced the Irving Eagle Essentials.  Please ask your child how we can be respectful, responsible, and safe in our classroom and at school.

In reader's workshop, we became readers!  We learned that we can read the world around us by looking, thinking, reading, and learning.  Please ask your child to tell you the difference between storybooks and teaching books.  Our read aloud of the week was The Recess Queen.  Our comprehension focus was identifying characters and sequencing the story with retell cards.  Take a peek at our kindergarten readers!

During writer's workshop, we learned that we are all writers! We began putting ideas on paper with pictures and words. We learned that writers think, draw, and write.

We began our monthly calendar books! In August, we are focusing on counting to ten, one to one correspondence to five, shape identification, and days of the week.  We are also practicing how to count to 100 every day!

This week in whole group math, we discussed how things can be the same and different.  We loved sorting kindergarten supplies and attribute block shapes by color, shape, and size.  During math tubs, we explored manipulatives, played roll to fill the cup and Bump, used playdough to create numbers and shapes, and played memory match.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians hard at work.
