Week 4 Highlights!

What a wonderful week!

During our Shared Reading, we focused on the nursery rhyme, Hickory Dickory Dock. We used our poem of the week to explore letters, sounds, rhyming words and print concepts.

In Phonics, we continue to learn each other's names and practice identifying and sorting by beginning sounds.  We introduced our how to study a name chart.  We can identify a name, study it, cheer it, count the letters, and stomp or clap the syllables.  We also introduced vowels.  We discussed the sounds vowels make and identified vowels in our names.  Our letters of the week were n, m, r, l, and i.

During Reader's Workshop, we learned that readers reread to rethink, that rereading helps readers learn from words in books, and that readers sound like teachers when they read.  Take a peek at our kindergarten readers practicing partner reading.

Our Read Aloud of the week was Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell. Our comprehension focus was identifying character, setting, and main event.  We also retold our story by sorting pictures that were and were not in our read aloud.  Please ask your child to share with you three details from our story.

During Daily Five word work stations this week, we introduced name puzzles and label it at the writing table.  We reviewed private reading, pom pom names, write the room, and name necklaces.  Please ask your child what was their favorite word work station this week.

This week during Writer's Workshop, we learned how to turn our writing into books!  We also introduced writing partners!  We practiced sharing a glow and a grow when reading and listening to peer writing.  Take a peek at our kindergarten writers hard at work!

In Whole Group Math, we introduced numbers 6, 7, and 8.  We practice one-to-one correspondence using our counting strategies such as touch, move, and make a line.  We began our second round of Math Tubs.  During our second rotation, we will practice one-to-one correspondence, writing numerals, shape identification, subitizing, making shapes, and playing Bump.  Please ask your child what was their favorite math tub this week. Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians.
