Mrs. Grogan's Kindergarten: Week 13 Highlights!

What a great week!

Our Nora Project focus this week was fixed and growth mindset. We read the story, The Dot, discussed how Vashti's mindset changed throughout the book. We also sorted fixed and growth mindset scenarios.

During our Shared Reading, we focused on the poem, Hibernate. We used this poem to explore letters, sounds, rhyming words and print concepts. We also introduced one new snap word this week. Our new word is is. Please practice identifying, reading, and writing our snap words with your child at home.

We continue to practice our smile starter capitals in our Handwriting curriculum. Our corner starter capitals are V, W, X, Y, and Z. Please have your child show you how to correctly write our letters at home.

In Reader's Workshop, we continue to explore reading superpowers in the second unit in our reading curriculum. This week we learned that readers can talk about what they are reading with their partner. We call this book talk power. Take a peek at our kindergarten readers private reading.

Our Read Aloud of the week was Bear Snores On. Our comprehension focus was identifying characters, setting, and important events. Please ask your child to share the beginning, middle, and end of our story using their retell strip

During Daily Five word work stations this week, used play-dough to make our names, created name puzzles, made name necklaces, matched letter and picture puzzles, composed letters using wood pieces and practiced phonemic awareness and phonics skills using Lexia. We practiced labeling pictures at the writing table. We continued our small group phonemic awareness and phonics groups this week. Please ask your child to share their sound sorts with you. Please ask your child what was their favorite daily five station this week.

This week during Writer's Workshop, we continued our show and tell unit. We are building quite a pattern book collection. This week's focus was adding an ending to our books. Take a peek at our show and tell writers.

In Whole Group Math, we continued to explore shapes our second Eureka Math module. This week we reviewed flat shapes, solid shapes, and positional words. We have also been practicing subitizing and writing numbers to 10.

We began our new round of Math Tubs. Our new round is all about number sense. We practiced subitizing, one to one correspondence, sequencing, addition, and number writing. Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians.
