In reading this week, we compared two pumpkin books, Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell and Pumpkin Circle by George Levenson. We identified which story was fiction and non-fiction. We discussed and completed a blueprint identifying the characters, setting, and main events in the story. We explored the life cycle of the pumpkin and identified its parts using the text, Pumpkin Circle. We completed our pumpkin study by making pumpkin pie during Cooking Friday and creating a pumpkin glyph with our Book Buddies.

In reader's workshop, the kiddos continue to practice reading with a partner. We are building reading stamina with our classroom reading buddy. Take a peek at our readers!
During writer's workshop this week, we introduced the Story Hand. When writing narrative stories, the story hand reminds us to include a character, setting, and three details. The kiddos are becoming such creative and detailed writers and illustrators. We even had a few kiddos complete their first book!
In math, we reviewed more and fewer and one to one correspondence. We also introduced our November calendar books! The kiddos really rose to the challenge and are enjoying the "rigor" of our new calendar books. During math stations we reviewed dice addition, number bingo, decomposing numbers using Find Sums, shape identification, and one to one correspondence. Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians.
Thank you to the parents and grandparents who joined us in the classroom this week to be our Mystery Reader, station volunteers, Cooking Friday chef, and birthday book readers. Take a peek at a few of our classroom volunteers.
Wednesday, November 11th is the 50th Day of Kindergarten! We will celebrate by dressing up as if we were in the 1950s, participate in a kindergarten sock hop, and have a tasty 50s treat. What a way to celebrate all that we have learned in 50 days of kindergarten!
The Irving Student Council is collecting mittens and gloves for the Irving Mitten Drive. The items will be donated to the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society's Children's Clinic. We will be collecting donations throughout the month of November.
