Week 18 Highlights

What a fun week!

Our story of the week was Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport.  Our comprehension focus was retelling a nonfiction story.  Please ask your child to share with you the important events in Martin's life using their picture strip.  We completed our first RI.7 blueprint using the illustrations to help us better understand the information text.  We will continue to use Martin's Big Words to explore literary elements next week.

We added one new word to the word wall this week.  Our new word wall word is do.  Please continue to practice identifying, reading, and writing word wall words with your child at home.

We continue to building reading and writing stamina during Daily Five, readers workshop, and writers workshop.  We are up to 15 minutes of independent reading and writing! Take a peek at our stamina readers and writers.

During Cooking Friday this week we created tasty, fruit snowmen.  After gobbling up our treat, we introduced how-to writing by composing recipe cards.

In whole group math, we continue to practice number bonds and ordering numbers and quantities 0-10.  We introduced the concept of one more.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians using our number cards to sequence and play one more.  During math stations, we reviewed addition to ten, dice addition, counting by tens to 100, and identifying teen numbers on the tens frame.

The highlight of the week was completing two science experiments.  Our kindergarten scientists were hard at work exploring ice using their five senses.  We also completed our first small group science experiment.  Our challenge was to develop a strategy to melt an ice cube the fastest.  The kiddos came up with really creative ideas of ways to make an ice cube melt.  Take a peek at our scientists conducting their experiment.  A big thank you for our secret scientist, Mrs. Trudell for her help with our group experiment.
