Week 15 Highlights

Happy December! Hard to believe we are 67 days into Kindergarten!

This week we had visitors! On Monday, Karrie Talbert, Eli's mom, joined us as our Mystery Reader! She read us three silly books that had us laughing after the long holiday weekend!

On Wednesday, Mrs. Grogan, Aoife and Emmett came to visit us! We sang some songs and showed Mrs. Grogan tricks with one more, one less.

On Friday, our 5th Grade Book Buddies came to see our Super Reading! We showed off our superpowers we've been working on in Reader's Workshop!

During our regular scheduled programming....

Our Shared Reading this week was a poem, Out in the Garden - helping us transition from fall to winter. We found sight words in the poem and continued to practice pointer power: one word, one touch.

During Reader's Workshop, we rotated around stations focusing on each super power thus far: Snap Word Power, Sound Power, Picture Power, Reread Power and Pointer Power. We also added Persistence Power to our tool belt to reinforce reading is a process and we must strengthen all our skills to build up to reading. When we tap into our persistence power, we remember to be strong and patient and remember all the strategies in our tool belt. Take a look at the Super Readers hard at work!

During Daily 5, we continued work on word families, beginning sound matching, upper and lowercase letter writing, November stories, reading to ourselves, and extra practice on Lexia. It is amazing to compare the stamina and independence from September and now! I am very impressed with their focus and excitement surrounding phonics, reading and writing!

During Writer's Workshop this week, we honed in on vowel sounds and sight words, and began integrating them into our writing. We added tools to our Red Writing Folders to help us enhance our sentences. We are hard at work finishing up stories to be published. This unit has been a breakthrough  for our young writers!

In Math, we wrapped up old math tubs in the first part of the week, and introduced new math tubs in the second half. The kindergartners were quite excited to learn new measurement games, comparing numbers, and subitizing activities!

Our whole group math lessons are focusing on one more and one less this week. We did some independent and partner practice with dice.

An addition weekly highlight: Friday Yoga :)
