Mrs. Grogan's Kindergarten: Week 21 Highlights

Hello! 100th day is fast approaching! Hard to believe we're over halfway through the Kindergarten Year!

Here's a peek at our week:

On Monday, we were lucky enough to have the Daniel Family all day long! Mr. Daniel was our substitute teacher, and Mrs. Daniel was our Mystery Reader!

Our Shared Reading this week was Arctic Animals - to the tune of Up On The House Top. We did word studies sorting by middle vowel sound, beginning and ending sound, and we added a new sight word to the word wall: to

We continued to work on vowel sounds. This week, our focus was short o. We played crocodile dentist and "chomp it up" to practice breaking down words and spelling CVC words.

We reinforced Short O CVC words in Daily 5 with the same activities, switching the vowel sound. We wrote the room, made a book of short O words, worked on writing, worked on Lexia and read to ourselves.

In Reader's Workshop, we went book shopping for new "Just Right Books" in addition to our book buddies. We talked about combining strategies: picture power and sound power. Using the pictures and letters we know equally to decode words and decide if they make sense. We read with partners to work on strategies, and read by ourselves to try out the strategies on our own.

In Writer's Workshop, we picked one goal from our checklist to focus on and continued to write How-To's. We conferred with our partners to help make our writing stronger.

We finished up this round of Math Tubs and are looking forward to new tubs next week. In whole group Math, we continued our work with Number Bonds - we continue to practice decomposing numbers within 10. Mr. Packer visited for Thinking Skills and taught us about "always, sometimes, never."
