Hello! We have made it over halfway through the year and celebrated our 100th Day of School! It is amazing how much we've grown and accomplished in the past 100 days!!!
On Monday, we had Eli's dad, Mr. Talbert, as our Mystery Reader! He had us belly laughing at The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak. Thank you for joining us!
This week, our Shared Reading was a poem called, Groundhog's Day, and it was sung to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. We discussed the tradition of Groundhog's Day, and did word studies (digraphs & consonant blends), as well as reviewed sight words.
Our vowel focus this week is SHORT U. We played "Chomp It Up" with our hungry crocodile, as well as Pop-Up Pals. In Daily 5, our word work reinforced the short u sound. We did some 100 day themed writing in the Writing Center. We integrated a sight word game bin to the Daily 5 mix, and continued to work on Lexia and Read to Ourselves.
In Reader's Workshop, we worked on a list of strategies to use when reading. Take a look... We practiced each strategy together as a group, and we will get a chance to apply these strategies in small groups and individually for the remainder of the unit.
In Writer's Workshop, we continued to write How-To's. We learned how to add more details by reading How-To books (mentor texts). We are working on giving detailed instructions and including lists, arrows, and bold words to our writing.
On Thursday, we had an author visit - Peter Reynolds for all K-2 students! For more photos from the school event, click here!
We had a visit from the members of the Green Team to help us learn how to compost in the lunchroom for the very successful Zero Waste Project. If you are interested in volunteering to help with composting in the lunchroom to continue the rapidly decreasing waste at school - Irving is seeking parent help! Visit the Sign Up Genius page to volunteer.
On Friday, we attended the Children's Opera {photos} and our Book Buddies came to visit afterwards.
In Math we got new math tubs and prepared for the big event... 100 Day! Take a look at our 100 Day Celebration! A BIG THANK YOU to all the families who sent in materials, and who came to volunteer.
