Week 30 Highlights!

What a wonderful week!

Here's a peek at our week:

Our Shared Reading this week was Spring Celebration to the tune of Ta Ra Ra Boom De Ay.  We sorted by word family and rhyming words.  We also introduced the word wall words on and us.  Please practice word wall words with your child at home.

We continue to explore independent early literacy skills during our Daily 5 word work stations.  We reviewed digraphs.  We also reviewed sight words by sorting, coloring, reading, and spinning a word wall word.  We worked on writing labels and stories, developed phonemic awareness skills using Lexia, and read to ourselves in our book boxes.  Please ask your child to share with you their favorite Daily Five station this week.

In Reader's Workshop, we became nonfiction avid readers!  We began this bend of our curriculum by learning, thinking, and reacting to nonfiction texts.  Next, we practiced talking like an expert.  We finished our week by having nonfiction reading playdates and building personal reading stamina.  We are up to 14 minutes of stamina reading.  Please ask your child to share with you how to be a nonfiction avid reader (think: Wow!, ask questions, and use fancy topic words).  Take a peek at our avid readers.

Our Read Aloud this week was Chickens Aren't the Only Ones by Ruth Heller.  Our comprehension focus was identifying the main topic and key details.  We also used our text to name and sort oviparous and viviparous animals.  We also practiced our nonfiction avid reading by finding fancy topic words in our story of the week.  Please ask your child to share with you one or more fancy topic words from our story.

In Writer's Workshop, we completed our opinion writing unit.  This week, we published our writing on the writing wall and sent letters to family members, friends, and teachers sharing our opinions.  Make sure to check your child's folder for their opinion writing samples and letters.

During Math Tubs, we introduced ten new tubs!   Our new tubs review one-to-one correspondence, addition to 10, subtraction, subitizing, BUMP, and number words.  In whole group Math, we practiced subtraction and number bonds.  We also completed core fluency sprints.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians.

In Science, we introduced our April STEM tubs.  This month we are creating structures using plastic eggs, playdough, peeps, jellybeans, and water bottles.  Take a peek at our kindergarten scientists.

On Thursday, Mrs. Brown joined us for Active April.  We moved and stretched our bodies like various animals.  We can't wait to incorporate more movement breaks into our school day.

We ended the week with a visit from our Book Buddies.  We shared our how-to digital books with our classmates!
