Week 35 Highlights and FIELD TRIP!

What a fun-filled week!

Here's a peek at our week:

Our Shared Reading this week was Field Trip to the tune, "On Top of Old Smokey".  We sorted by beginning blends.  We added one new word to the word wall.  Our new word wall word is was.  Please practice sight words with your child at home.

We continue to explore independent early literacy skills during our Daily 5 word work stations.  This week we introduced new word sorts.  We cut, colored, and raced to sort beginning sounds, short vowels, blends, or long vowels.  We practiced reading and writing words that begin with blends and digraphs.  We also reviewed sight words by sorting, coloring, reading, and spinning a word wall word.  We worked on writing labels and stories, developed phonemic awareness skills using Lexia, and read to ourselves in our book boxes.  Please ask your child to share with you their favorite Daily Five station this week.

In Reader's Workshop, we reviewed stamina reading and reading goals.  We practiced our reading goal independently and with partners.  Take a peek at our avid readers!

In Writer's Workshop, we completed our small moment narratives.  We can't wait to share our writing with you when our green folders go home on Monday.

During Math Tubs, we reviewed one-to-one correspondence, addition to 10, subtraction, subitizing, BUMP, and number words.  In whole group Math, we continue to explore teen numbers.  We practice counting teen numbers in rows and arrays.  We also practiced core fluency sprints.

In Science, we explored our new snail tubs.  This week we observed and read about snails, labelled the parts of the snail, sorted and classified shells, and determined what snails do and do not eat.

Our kindergarten scientists visited the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum for a field trip.  Take a peek at our kindergartners exploring nature using their senses.  We had so much fun that the bus ride back was especially quiet.  Thank you to Mrs. Boucher, Mrs. Simoes, and Mr. Wollwage for chaperoning our trip!

On Thursday, we had our first round of Traveling Poets.  We are poets and we know it!

We ended the week with a visit from our Book Buddies.  We continued working on our shared research projects all about animals.  We can't wait to teach our classmates all about our favorite animals.
