We made it through the first week of kindergarten! We have
been busy learning all about classroom and school routines and procedures,
beginning with the Eagle Essentials.
Please ask your child to share with you how we can be respectful, responsible,
and safe in Room 116 and Irving School.
Ask them to share how we can earn an Eagle Slip! We monitor our classroom behavior using our
behavior calendars. Please check your
child’s green folder nightly to see how their day went. At the end of each week, please sign your
child’s behavior calendar so that I know you are in the know about how your
child is doing at school. In the green
folder you will also find student work, which can be left at home and notes
about important Irving opportunities and events, which can be returned in the
right pocket. You will also find
homework assignments in the green folder each Friday afternoon. Please remember that homework is due the
following Friday.
This week we began establishing many of our academic routines
such as Writer’s Workshop, Reader’s Workshop, Reading Stations, Math Whole
Group, and Math Stations. During
Writer’s Workshop we introduced our writing journals and began developing
writing stamina. Please ask your child
to share how we write a story—think, draw, write!
Our story of the week was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. The reading comprehension skills we focused
on this week were retell, connect, problem and solution. Please ask your child to share their opinion
about their favorite part of the book.
Our kindergartners have become so familiar with the text that they could
probably read the book to you!
In Reader’s Workshop, we selected books for our personal
book bins, learned how to be a book lover, and began developing reading stamina. Please ask your child to show you how they
are book lovers. In reading stations, we
focused on working in a group and working the whole time. Please ask your child to share with you their
favorite reading station this week.
This week in math, we discussed how things can be the same
and different. We loved sorting our
kindergarten shoes! This week’s focus
was sorting by color, size, and shape.
We explored math manipulatives during stations this week.
Finally, we had our first Cooking Friday of the year! Please
ask your child to share with you how they made their own coconut trees from
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.
