This week in kindergarten, we continued our Kevin Henkes author study by reading Wemberly Worried. Our comprehension focus was identifying character, setting, and major events. We sorted picture cards of events that occurred and did not occur in our story to help us look closely at details. We also discussed connections we have to our main character, worrisome Wemberly.
We added a new word to the word wall this week, can. We cheered out our word wall, identified it in our weekly poem, and practiced using it in our writing. Using our yellow word wall word chart and word wall list 1 as your guide, please help your child identify, read, and write our word wall words at home.
In readers workshop, we are busy building reading stamina. We are up to 8 minutes of independent reading. We discussed three ways to read a book. Please have your child share with you how they can look at the pictures to tell the story, tell a story that they already know, and read the words.
During Daily Five word work stations this week, we reviewed upper and lowercase letter matching and identification, introduced beginning sound sorting, practiced following step by step directions during directed drawing, and assembled our friends names using picture-name puzzles. Take a peek at our kindergarten word workers.
This week during writer's workshop, we introduced the alphabet chart and added it to our writing folders. We are practicing using the alphabet chart to help us stretch out words. We are also busy building writing stamina. We are up to twelve minutes of independent writing! Take a peek at our kindergarten writers hard at work!
In Eureka Math, we sorted and classified objects into two and three categories. Once we created our categories, we practiced counting one-to-one to 4. We also introduced the fun fluency game, pop up number. Please ask your child to share with you how to play our game at home. During math tubs, we practiced number writing, one-to-one correspondence, counting on ten frames, number puzzles, sorting by color and size, and identifying objects that the same or almost the same. Take a peek at our kindergartners exploring their new math toolkits. We will use our math toolkits to help develop fluency skills.
