We made it through the first week of kindergarten! We have been busy learning all about classroom and school routines and procedures, beginning with the Eagle Essentials. Please ask your child to share with you how we can be respectful, responsible, and safe in Room 116 and Irving School. We monitor our classroom behavior using our behavior calendars. Please check your child’s yellow folder nightly to see how their day went. In the yellow folder you will also find student work, which can be left at home and notes about important Irving opportunities and events, which can be returned in the right pocket. You will also find homework assignments in the yellow folder each Friday afternoon. Please make sure you check your child's folder this evening for our first kindergarten homework assignment.

This week we began establishing many of our academic routines such as writer’s workshop, reader’s workshop, calendar book, whole group math, and math tubs.
During writer’s workshop we introduced our writing folders, materials, and supplies. We began our first story! Please ask your child to share what we can add to our story "when we think we're done, we've only just begun". Look at our writers hard at work!
Our story of the week was The Recess Queen. The reading comprehension skill we focused on this week was retell. Take a peek at our kindergartners sequencing the story events independently. Please ask your child to share three details from our story.
In reader’s workshop, we received books for our personal book bins and learned how to be a book lover. Please ask your child to share with you how we select a book, hold the book correctly, turn the pages, read, and put the book back where it belongs.
We began our monthly calendar books! In September, we are focusing on numbers 1-5. We are learning how to show numbers in ten frames, dominos, tally marks, and dice. We are also practicing how to count to 100 every day!

This week in whole group math, we discussed how things can be the same and different. We loved sorting our kindergarten shoes! This week’s focus was sorting by color, size, and shape. Take a peek at our kindergartners sorting by color with their peanut butter and jelly partners.
During math tubs, we explored manipulatives, sorted shapes, played race to fill the cup, used playdough to create numbers, and assembled number puzzles. Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians hard at work!
We had our first Cooking Friday of the year! Take a peek at our kindergartners sharing their favorite fruits to create a friendship salad.
We ended our wonderful first week by meeting our book buddies from Mr. Sakellaris's 5th grade class. Take a peek at a few sweet pictures of our kindergartners with their book buddy. Don't worry more buddy pictures to come! I can't wait to see their friendships blossom during our kindergarten year.
