What a great week!
Our story of the week was Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Using our summative blueprints as a guide, we identified the characters, setting, and main event of our story. We completed our first summative blueprint assessment this week! I cannot wait to share with you your child’s impressive work at conferences.
We added two new words to the word wall this week. Our new word wall words are see and a. Please practice identifying our word wall word while reading and writing at home. Don’t forget to practice our sight word punch card with your kindergartner at home.
During reader’s workshop, we reviewed the three ways to read a book: tell a story you already know, look at the pictures and tell the story, and read the words. We introduced and practiced reading from left to right and from top of the page to the bottom. We are building reading stamina and are at eight minutes of independent reading. Next week, we will complete our first reader’s workshop unit with a reading celebration!
This week, we incorporated reader's workshop into our Daily Five reading station time. Our kindergartners were able to choose between word work or read to self. We introduced word work using word wall words. We sorted, read, colored, and wrote our word wall words. Please ask your child to share with you their favorite reading station.
During writer’s workshop, we completed our first on-demand writing prompt. Take a peek at our kindergarten writers hard at work! We are working on creating a story with a beginning, middle, and end, just like the books we read. We also completed our first month of kindergarten writing! Please check your child's folder for September writing samples. Look at our kindergartners sharing stories with their peanut butter and jelly partners.
In math, we introduced the new fluency games such as sunrise/sunset counting, rekenrek roller coaster, and line up, sprinkle, circle. Take a peek at our mathematicians working on fluency with their peanut butter and jelly partners. During math tubs, we reviewed one-to-one correspondence, number writing, and number identification using dice and ten frames.
During science, we began our apples thematic unit. We used our five senses to describe an apple. We ended the week by creating apple smiles in the classroom. Take a peek at our kindergarten scientists!
