Week Six Highlights!

What a wonderful week!

We began our week with our first family member Mystery Reader, Emerson.  The kiddos loved guessing our reader and listening to Chicks and Salsa.  We cannot wait to have more family members join us for Mystery Reader Monday!

Our story of the week was How Rocket Learned to Read by Tad Hills.  We discussed Tad Hills's role as both the author and illustrator and identified how each role contributes to the story.  We sequenced retell cards and created our own blueprints identifying the characters, setting, and important events.  Please have your child retell the story to you using their retell cards.

We added the word we to the word wall this week.  Please practice reading, writing, and identifying our word wall words with your child at home.

During Daily Five reading stations, we continue to review word wall words during word work, build reading stamina by reading to self, and labelling pictures at the writing table.  Please ask your child to share with you their favorite reading station.

We had our first computer lab visit this week!  With the help of Mr. Karol, we logged into Lexia and began our first lesson. Look at our kindergartners hard at work!

In writer's worksop, we introduced teaching books.  We began our week writing a list to organize our thoughts, turned our list into a detailed informational story, and finished our writing with labels and a sentence.  We also shared our writing with our peanut butter and jelly partner to give and get suggestions of ideas, pictures, and words to add to our piece.  Please continue to practice thinking, drawing, and writing stories with your child at home.

We completed our first set of letters in our handwriting curriculum, our frog jump capitals.  The frog jump capital letters are F, E, D, P, B, R, M, and N.  Please ask your child to show you how to make our frog jump letters at home.

In math, we introduced decomposition of numbers using words, pictures, and written expressions.  We also practiced number writing from zero to three.  Our fluency games this week included sunrise/sunset counting, finger counting, and rekenrek roller coaster.

During math tubs this week, we practiced one-to-one correspondence, number writing, matching numeral to quantity, played Bump!, sequenced and assembled number puzzles, and introduced two dice addition.  Take a peek at our mathematicians hard at work!

In science, we identified and labeled the parts of an apple, discussed and sequenced the life cycle of an apple, and created homemade applesauce as our Cooking Friday treat.
