Week 14 Highlights!

What a wonderful week! It sounds like all our families had a lovely holiday weekend filled with fun and family.  We got right back to the swing of things in our classroom this week beginning with our new unit, Winter Holidays and Traditions.  We discussed different winter holidays and ways we celebrate the holidays.

Our story of the week was The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth.  The kiddos made predictions, retold the main events in the story, created a blueprint detailing story elements, and acted out our story for our classmates.  We have some actors and actresses in the making in our classroom.

We began the second unit of reader's workshop this week.  We will be exploring powerful partnerships.  The kindergartners will work together to read and talk about books.  Take a peek at our kindergartners partner reading!

We added one new word to the word wall this week.  Our new word wall word is is.  Please continue to practice identifying, reading, and writing word wall words with your child at home.

In Writer's Workshop, we introduced hot dog partners!  With our ketchup and mustard partner, we work together to support more conventional writing.  We use are partners to help us make readable writing.  This week, we also introduced writing goals.  Each child chose a goal to focus on while writing personal narratives.  Some of our writing goals include write sounds, use finger spaces, use word wall words, make words easy to read, and tell more.  Please ask your child to share with you their writing goal.

Take a peek at our kindergartners hard at work during our Daily Five reading and writing stations.  This week we introduced QR codes on the iPad!  Using the QR codes, we listened to gingerbread stories.

In guided math, we introduced our December calendar books and solid shapes!  In our December calendar books, we continue to focus on number writing; counting using tens frame, tally marks; and dice and domino addition.  We added weather graphing and numbers bonds to our daily calendar routine.  During whole group math, we began exploring 2D and 3D shapes.  We learned about sides, corners, and faces on shapes.  We also sorted and classified shapes.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians hard at work!

Take a peek at our kindergarten chefs making a polar bear treat!

A big thank you to our Mystery Reader this week.
