Week 15 Highlights!

What a fun and busy week!

We began our week with two Mystery Readers!  We had two fifth grade book buddies and former Grogan kindergartners join us to share their favorite books.

We continued our Winter Holidays and Traditions theme in our reading and writing this week.  Our story of the week was The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst.  During our whole group reading, the kiddos made predictions, sequenced story events, and compared the characters of The Gingerbread Girl to the characters in The Gingerbread Man.

We added one new word wall word to the word wall this week.  Our new word wall word is play.  Please continue to practice identifying, reading, and writing our kindergarten word wall words with your child at home.

In Writer's Workshop, we began the publishing bend of our narrative writing unit.  We learned that writers search their mental and drawn pictures to make their stories better, developed strategies to write amazing story beginnings, shared ideas for story words, and worked together with our hot dog partner to revise our writing.  Take a peek at our kindergartner writers hard at work!

During Daily Five reading and writing stations, we continue to develop our independent working skills through reading to self, listening to reading, working on writing, and completing word work activities.  Please ask your child what their favorite Daily Five station was this week!  Take a peek at our kindergartners during Daily Five.

During Reader's Workshop, we learned how to read and share with a partner.  We are building our reading stamina while learning strategies of how to share what we read.  We learned we can retell our story, read together, or take turns reading aloud to share the stories in our book bins.  Take a peek at our partner readers!

In whole group math, we continue to explore flat and solid shapes.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians sorting shapes with their peanut butter and jelly partner.  During math tubs, we reviewed numeral writing, addition, number sequence, shape idenification, and played Bump.

We ended the week with a sweet treat.  We made hot chocolate for Cooking Friday!  Take a peek at our kindergarten chefs sampling our tasty drink.

Our Irving Kindergarten Winter Concert and Classroom Brunch is Wednesday, December 21st. The first show begins at 8:15am in the Irving Auditorium.  Following the first show, the kiddos will return to the classroom to rest our singing voices and prepare for our second performance at 9:45am.  Immediately following our second show, we will begin our classroom brunch.  In the next few days, please take a peek at the Sign-Up Genius sent by our fabulous Room Moms.  Any donation to our classroom brunch would be greatly appreciated.  We can't wait to celebrate with all our kindergarten families.
