Week 21 Highlights!

What a fun week!

Our story of the week was Animals in Winter by Henrietta Bancroft.  Our text detectives used illustrations to help understand the story, identified reasons an author gives to support a point, and described the connection between two pieces of information in a text.  We are so impressed by our informational text detectives!

We added one new word wall word to the word wall this week.  Our new word wall word is this.  Please continue to practice our word wall words and sight word lists with your child at home.

In writer's workshop, we continue to write how-to books, step by step.  This week we began the second bend of our third writing unit.  Bend two is all about using mentor texts for inspiration.  We will also revise old how-to book and begin writing new ones.  This week's big lessons were writers emulate features of informational writing using a mentor text.  We also began using the word you in our how-to writing to really talk to the reader.  Take a peek at the anchor chart we created!

We completed Module 3 of our Eureka Math curriculum this week!  To celebrate, we practiced sprints and fluency.  We also were busy preparing for the 100th day of kindergarten.  This week during math tubs we wrote our numbers to 100, roll and tallied to 100, roll and raced to 100, created objects with 100 pattern blocks, unifix cubes, cups, and craft sticks.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians hard at work!

We continue to focus our science exploration on wood and water.  This week we created rafts out of plywood and cedar planks.  Using paperclips as passengers, we determined how many passengers could fit on a raft before it sank.  Take a peek at our kindergarten scientists!

We completed our Art Start program this week.  We learned the dance alphabet.  Take a peek at our kindergarten dancers creating their very own dance sentences!

We ended our week with a visit from our Book Buddies!  Take a peek at our kindergartners and fifth grade buddies reading together!
