Week 22 Highlights!

What an exciting week!

We began our week with celebrating the 100th day of kindergarten!  Take a peek at our kindergartners completing fun activities and projects during our Hearts and Hundreds party.  Thank you so much to our parent volunteers who made our celebration a success.

We ended the 100th day of kindergarten with a Mystery Reader.  Take a peek at Abe sharing two Elephant and Piggies stories.  Perfect for our new reading unit!

We began our Mo Willems author study this week!  During the month of February, we will be reading and exploring Mo Willems' classics.  Our story of the week was Leonardo the Terrible Monster.  We identified character and events, retold the story using picture cards, and used pictures to help understand the text.  Please ask your child to retell the story of Leonardo and Sam to you at home.

We added one new word wall word to the word wall this week.  Our new word wall word is do.  Please continue to practice our word wall words and sight word lists with your child at home.

In writer's workshop, we continue to write how-to books, step by step.  This week we completed the second bend of our third writing unit.  Bend two is all about using mentor texts for inspiration.  This week's big ideas were writers picture each step and then choose exactly the right words, writers guide readers with warnings, suggestions, and tips, and using comparisons to give readers clear directions.  Take a peek at the anchor chart we created!

We began the forth module of our math curriculum this week!  Module 4 is all about addition, subtraction, and number bonds.  Take a peek at our kindergartners decomposing numbers into number bonds!  This week during math tubs we wrote our numbers to 100, roll and tallied to 100, roll and raced to 100, created objects with 100 pattern blocks, unifix cubes, cups, and craft sticks.  Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians hard at work!

In science this week, we began our investigation of paper.  This week we used our four senses to explore nine different types of paper.  We discovered there are many things that are made of paper.  Please ask your child to share with you five objects in our classroom and at home that are made of paper.

We ended our week with a visit from our Book Buddies!  Using the edu-creations app on the iPad, we are creating how-to books with our 5th grade partners.  This week we brainstormed ideas, picked a topic, and began planning out our how-to e-books.  We cannot wait to share with you our teaching stories.
