Our story of the week was Just Going to the Dentist by Mercer Mayer. During whole group reading we focused on the following comprehension skills: predict, retell, connect, and infer. Please ask your child to retell the story of Little Critter's trip to the dentist. We continued our dental health theme with a tasty cooking Friday treat. Take a peek at our kindergarten chefs.
We continue to building reading and writing stamina. This week we read to self or with a partner for twenty minutes! During writer's workshop, we practiced narrative, how to, and opinion writing. We updated our writing goals and many of students are challenging themselves to tell more in their stories. Ms. Bailey and I are so impressed with our hardworking kindergarten writers.
We added one new word to the word wall this week. Our new word wall word is big. Please continue to practice sight word lists with your child at home. Remember knowing all kindergarten sight words will help your child become a more confident reader and writer.
In whole group math, we introduced the number line to fifteen. With our learning buddy, we rolled the die, placed a cube on the number, rolled again, and counted on on the number line. We are also practicing using our new math talk language to verbalize addition and subtraction equations. Please ask your child to share with you our new math talk. During math stations, we introduced kindergarten yahtzee and one more bingo. We reviewed skip counting by tens, making new shapes using pattern blocks, and teens on the ten frame. Please ask your child to share with you their favorite math station this week. Take a peek at our kindergarten mathematicians during whole group and station activities.
This week we had a visit from the District 97 Multicultural Center. Ms. Allen shared with the kindergartners information about Black History Month along with examples of African art.
We ended our week with a sweet visit from our Book Buddies. Take a peek at our kindergartners showing their 5th grade buddies their early literacy skills.
